  • WHO ARE YOU?

    thorminc1 8:21 am on November 1, 2008 Permalink | Reply

Today I had an unusual opportunity to speak with some men in a group setting. As I listened with a “female” ear to men speaking I was drawn to ask them a question…”Who are you”? This question met with a question from the men…”what do you mean, who am I”? I could see the puzzled look in all of their faces. This question was never asked of them before and I could see that, due to no fault of their own, they had no answer. One even replied…”no one ever asked me that before”. (he was 55 years old)

After some thought, a few began to reply by giving me their name. Keep in mind, I knew their names, but when looking at the record of some men coming back into the community, they may have as many as 48 aliases. So many times we pretend to be someone else to get away from pain, embarrassment, and guilt that we lose ourselves. We are so busy hiding behind other persona that we forget who we really are. So, hence the question, “Who are you”?

Men as young as 80 years old and younger have a difficult time answering this question. Believe it or not, the average person caught off guard even have a difficult time coming up with an answer to this question.

Why? Because most people are so busy with the cares of life that they rarely have time to reflect inwardly to see who they are or why do they do the things they do?

You see, until you come to an understanding about “who are you”, there will be difficulty in determining why you took such actions and was there truly another way to handle that person or situation?

What do you stand for, or fall for? What really makes you happy or sad and why? Are you a loner or a people person and why? Are you a leader or a follower? Are you pessimistic or are you a self-starter?

Putting aside the usual answer people give…as though they have pulled out the Webster Dictionary, they begin throwing out words that they feel they possess in their character. “Good, loving, trustworthy, helper, caring, determined…etc… in actuality in a desperate situation, none of these words come out in character, words or behavior. In fact, quite the opposite.

Who are you? In times of crisis? In times of loneliness? In times of embarrassment, heartache and fears? Who are you?

This is not meant to be a trick question nor one of deep psychological treatment or theological debate, just a casual question.

Jesus asked the disciples…”who do men say I am”? It was not that Jesus did not know who He was, but simply what were people saying about him. Now, keep this in mind. Jesus was not dignified by who or what people were saying. He was already assured as to who he was, what his mission was and what was needed in sacrifice of him to complete the arduous task set before him. He knew exactly who his Father was and Jesus knew what his assignment was. He said…”I am the truth and the light… He knew!

Do you know enough about yourself so that you are not moved by what people say about you, truth or lie? Is what people think or believe about you enough to redirect your mission or worse yet, stop your mission dead in its track?

Do you know enough about yourself that regardless of what your assignment is and you find yourself alone, you have enough on the inside to keep the hope and vision alive?

What do you really know about yourself? Are you satisfied with yourself, do you want change and if so, do you know where to begin or the right person that could mentor, direct and teach you?

    Who are you?
